The problem with the ‘privilege’ defense of not being vegan?

Because, although I am aware that there will definately be people who cannot be vegan - I find the way some people go about explaining so can only mean a couple of things. If you wish you could be vegan but cannot due to financial circumstances then you would not be yelling abuse at vegans and making countless anti-vegan posts. There is not a lot of sense in that. You would be saying something like “man, I wish I could commit to being vegan but my financials mean A B and C… I totally agree with all your points though and would love to help out in any way I can”.

Ofcourse this is not the response most often seen. The people who argue about priviledge in this way are not ‘standing up’ for the poor and they are not providing valid arguments against veganism… They are people who do not want to be vegan or care about veganism and use this defense so they do not have to take responsibility for their choice to be immoral.

So although I think that it is true that a small minority of people cannot be vegan due to financial issues…. I really doubt it is these people who spend their lives on tumblr talking about it. The people who do are just using it as a distraction.

  2. ledastray answered: Urm, vegetables are so cheap and entirely vegan///
  3. fitvegan4life answered: Animal agriculture is subsidized with tax payers money. People need to get educated to the fact that they pay for the ‘cheap’ food they love.
  4. veganheadspace answered: Funny thing is meat is one of the most expensive foods calorie for calorie. Eating meat and dairy is a luxury. The cheapest foods are vegan.

  6. bliss0m answered: vegan diets are relatively cheap though, and cost the same if not less, as an omniverous diet..
